Mother's Day originated in Greece, and the ancient Greeks paid tribute to Hera, the mother of the gods in Greek mythology, on this day. In the mid-17th century, Mother's Day spread to England, and the British took the fourth Sunday of Lent as Mother's Day. On this day, the children who are away from home will return home and bring some small gifts to their mothers.
Mother's Day in the modern sense originated in the United States. The initiator was Anna Jarvis, a Philadelphian from the United States. This woman was never married and had no children under her knees. On May 9, 1906, Anna Jarvis's mother passed away, and she was deeply saddened. On the anniversary of his mother's death the following year, Jarvis organized activities to commemorate his mother and encouraged others to express their gratitude to their loving mothers in similar ways.
Jarvis wrote to the Andrews Methodist Episcopal Church in Grafton, West Virginia, requesting a special memorial service for her mother. Her mother served the church's Sunday school for more than 20 years. In 1908, the church announced the anniversary of the death of Jarvis's mother - the second Sunday in May as Mother's Day. Jarvis also organized a Mother's Day Committee and began a large-scale publicity call for Mother's Day to be made a statutory holiday.
Her call was met with enthusiasm. On May 10, 1913, the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives passed a resolution, and President Wilson signed a proclamation, deciding that the second Sunday in May each year is Mother's Day. This move has caused countries all over the world to follow suit. By the time of Jarvis's death in 1948, 43 countries had established Mother's Day.
